5:30 am! This is the first time I have missed two consecutive days. I must be feeling guilty, as I am up a bit early this morning.

Two themes are emerging, both within a technology framework.

  • One is to continue reading Lessig's book.
  • Two is to begin learning a little bit about Linux.

I am remaining true to the principle of learning about topics that I know very little about.

I purchased a magazine yesterday called Maximum Linux, and had a good chat with a student who has a fair amount of experience with Linux. I have placed a request with the university for an "old" PC that I can play on. Then I will see what happens when I try to install Linux. The magazine comes with a "Storm Linux 2000" CD for installing Linux.

The magazine is an introduction into a new culture. One of the feature articles is about Stallman, Raymond and Torvalds. After reading Raymond's book, I recognize all three names and even know why.

The ad for one of the "distributions" is a company called Suse (pronounced Sue-zuh) ? which promises that I will soon be a cyberstudmuffin. I assume this is a good thing.

Browsing the maximumlinux website, I now know why the penguin is the Linux mascot/logo. Torvalds once visited Phillip Island in Victoria, Australia where he was bitten by a fairie penguin. (I have been there, but kept my hands away from the penguins ).

Here are a few Linux URLs from the magazine:

There is much here to learn, but the excitement of a new challenge is undeniable.
