Tuesday September 05, 2006 6:30 am Windsor, Ontario. Day 21 of our trip to Virginia. Sunrise 7:01 Sunset 8:00 Hours of daylight: 12:59

A. Morning Musings

6:00 am It is still very dark outside. It is + 14 C and overcast. The forecast high is + 24 C with a 40% chance of showers in the afternoon. Today we genuinely begin the "heading home" part of the trip.

B. Plan

No plan. We will take the day as it comes and see where we end up.

C. Actual/Notes

4:40 PM We have just pulled into a Best Western motel in Escanaba, Michigan. It has been a full driving day. We are both much further north and much further west than we were yesterday, although we spent the entire day in Michigan. Somehow we missed an exit as soon as we passed through American Customs in Detroit and ended up on the wrong highway. Fortunately this was not a problem as we found a connecting road about 20 miles down the road. Traffic was very heavy from Detroit to Flint but it then settled down. The Mackinac bridge over the straits of Mackinac was an unexpected treat - it is about 5 miles long and very impressive to see. After we got on highway 2 we slowed down to a country pace which was actually very pleasant. It was an excellent start to the trip home. We estimate it will take 3 more "driving" days plus a possible stop in Regina for some genealogy work.
