Monday September 04, 2006 6:00 am Windsor, Ontario. Day 20 of our trip to Virginia. Sunrise 7:00 Sunset 8:02 Hours of daylight: 13:02

A. Morning Musings

6:00 am It is still very dark outside. It is + 15 C and overcast. The forecast high is + 22 C with a 30% chance of showers in the afternoon. The forecast is almost identical to yesterday's, which turned out to be a fine day. Hopefully today will be more of the same.

B. Plan

We plan to visit another bird watching reserve this morning.

C. Actual/Notes

3:00 PM We are back in our hotel room for a couple of hours rest before going out for dinner. I would characterize today as our best single day of bird watching in North America. Carl drove us to Holiday Beach, a bird watching reserve that is noted for its hawk count during the fall. Here is a list of the birds we saw, many of which were identified by Carl.

  • Great Egret
  • Red-winged Blackbird
  • Great Blue Heron
  • Double-crested Cormorant
  • Black-crowned Night-Heron
  • Eastern Phoebe
  • Mute Swan
  • Swainson's Thrush
  • Magnolia Warbler
  • Wilson's Warbler
  • Ruby-throated Hummingbird
  • Ring-beaked Gull
  • Herring Gull
  • American Redstart
  • Pied-billed Grebe
  • Common Moorhen
  • Belted Kingfisher
  • Cattle Egret

We got to see the Swainson's Thrush, Magnolia Warbler and Wilson's Warbler up very close as the head of the local bird watching club had just caught them in a net and was showing them to the people on the hawk watching platform. Incredible! This was a totally new experience for us.

We had dinner at a Tony Roma's restaurant that was a short walk from a Chapter's bookstore. I did manage to buy one more book:

  • Mind Map Handbook. (2005) Tony Buzan.
    • I have his previous books as well as the software that allows one to create mind maps.
