A. Morning Musings

5:10 am The temperature is + 11 C with a high forecast of + 13. Rain is forecast for today and tomorrow before the sunshine returns. The weather has put a halt on the work around the house.

We plan to see a Mac Powerbook Pro while having coffee this morning. It will go a long way toward making a decision on whether to purchase one or not.

I should check with the university about any last minute forms that need to be filled in regarding my pension and health coverage.

Given the weather I think that my time will be split between reading and working on the model train layout.

C. Actual/Notes

History Session 2

History Chronology

2:10 PM I have read the first hundred pages of "Citizens" and have made a few rough notes.

I am still struggling with an appropriate format for the notes that I want to make while reading this book.

Preparing some form of online table is infinitely better than any paper-based approach as I can make modifications as I become more deeply involved in the topic.

Here is my first version of a table:

Date
Person
Event
Commentary

1756 - 1763   Seven Years War European counterpart to the war in America between the English and the French
1774 Louis XVI Ascended to the throne at age 19
1774 Vergennes Appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs
1774 Turgot Appointed Controller-General
1775 Louis XVI Coronation
1775 - 1783   American War of Independence "For France, without any question, the Revolution began in America." 24
1777 Lafayette Valley Forge USA Lafayette was with Washington at this battle.

1777 Jacques Necker promoted to Director-General
1778   France enters into treaty relations with the USA
1779   French plans to invade England thwarted by bad weather
1779 Lafayette returns to France

1783   Treaty of Paris Great Britain recognizes the USA
1788 - 1799   French Revolution

"The causes of the French Revolution were located deep within the structure of the society that preceded it."

It is at the top, rather than in any imaginary middle of French society, that the cultured roots of the revolution should be sought."

The revolution did not create French patriotism, rather it gave the patriotism an opportunity to define itself in terms of 'liberty'."

When I want to modify the above table I should copy it into the new session notes and then make the changes. That allows me to monitor the development of the table as I proceed.

Food Chronology

6:40 PM
Tonight we woked a favorite recipe of ours from "Sensational Stir-fries" published by The Australian Women's Weekly Cookbooks: "Pork and Macadamia Stir-fried Salad" [p. 78]

This is a delicious meal. I have made it many times before and always enjoyed it. Tonight we tried cooking it on the wok. A bit to my surprise this turned out to be much easier than using a fry pan. I was also right to try much less oil and that worked just fine. The meat cooked much more quickly than before and the cashew (substituted for the macadamia) nuts were browned much more easily and better.

Overall I think the meal turned out to be much better when cooked on the wok. I would give it a score of 5 chopsticks out of 5. I even used chopsticks to eat the meal - which seemed appropriate. And once again, beer seemed to complement the meal perfectly.
