B. Actual Learning Activities

4:30 PM

I am pretty sure the problem with a jerky video is a combination of an old CPU (i.e. slow) on the Mac and a huge file (HD video) from the camera. The video seems to work fine on a newer mac.

Model Trains: I completed the run for Train 600 with switching at both Queenston and Wild Rose. I also carried out some yard switching in Coaldale as I put both the locomotive and caboose on separate tracks. I then ran Train 201, the Black Zephyr - a unit coal train, from Coaldale to Black Diamond. I ran into some difficulty on the dual track bridge but added some support under the track and it now works fine. Interesting how it worked well when the train was going in the opposite direction. By running all trains in both directions I am giving the layout a complete test. I have now completed the runs for 7 trains - only 3 more to go.

9:00 PM

More Model Trains: I ran the passenger train again before realizing that I changed the timetable for this to begin in Coaldale and then make the return trip immediately following its arrival in Jasper. Although it does not affect any of the freight trains, nor does it involve any switching, I should either change the timetable within the Ship It! database or remove the train completely from the program and simply run it independently.

While conducting some switching within the Coaldale Yard as part of the forming the consist for Train #701 I noticed that boxcar CN 552942 was consistently derailing at a particular spot. I finally determined that it was due to the wheels rather than the track. These were then replaced with Kadee 33" flat back wheel sets and that resolved the difficulty.
