I cleaned the entire Coaldale Yard track today with both the BriteBoy eraser as well as the liquid Track & Rail Cleaner (ACT-606). I then ran the diesel switcher CN 7985 (an S-4) over the entire yard. I had a little trouble stalling on a couple of the switches but a small piece of cardboard under the switches seemed to solve the problem. This yard is now ready for moving cars about as I assemble and dis-assemble trains. Good. Another component is ready to use.

I spent a couple of hours surfing the web and reading a couple of reports on the use of Ship It! software. Most of the steps are straight forward but there are also a few nuances to keep in mind.

One involves the appropriate use of Towns, Yards and Interchanges. I think a Yard may be in a Town, but it is important to not have any industries in a Yard. I am not sure about Consignees such as the coaling/sanding tower which receive a product but do not ship a product.

I located a web site that gives 51 (!) rules of thumb for using Ship It! I will need to continually compare what I am doing with these guidelines.

The Ship It! Manual suggests that one create a table that lists each industry and what it ships and receives. The following table is a beginning at collecting this information.

I know that I need to have shippers and consignees matched (i.e. every product that is received somewhere must be shipped from at least one source). I will also need to identify what type of car (AAR code) is required for transporting each product.

Once again, I had a nice balance between operations (running CN 7985 diesel in the Coaldale Yard) and planning for the eventual use of Switch It!.
