Monday August 30, 2010 Lethbridge, Alberta

4:00 PM

I cleaned the Inner Mainline track with Track & Rail Cleaner (ACT-606) which appears to do a great job. I ran two different consists over this route and did not experience any stalls or shorts. Excellent.

The first consist was sitting in the Coaldale Yard from yesterday's runs: CN 7847 (an Alco RS-3 diesel locomotive) pulling CN 526254 (boxcar), CN 539027 (boxcar), GTW 516134 (boxcar), CN 123411 (gondola), CN 524270 (boxcar), CN 599000 (boxcar). This was a train of 6 freight cars.

I did experience problems with two of the cars which derailed on at least two occasions: CN 539027 & GTW 516134. I am not sure what the problem is at the moment but have removed both cars from operation.

The second consist was CN 1720 (a GP-7 diesel locomotive) pulling CN 445531 (boxcar), CN 242705 (boxcar), FGEX 36742 (reefer), CN 171605 (stock car), SB 105 (reefer), CN 424077 (boxcar), CN 78213 (caboose). This was a train of 7 cars which ran perfectly at all times. Excellent. The track layout seems fine.

The route from Coaldale to Queenston and then to Jasper is a westward route and thus a train running this route should have an odd number. The route from Jasper to Queenston and then to Coaldale is an eastward route and thus a train running this route should have an even number.

Passenger Trains can be either Continental or Local. Freight Trains can be either Through Freight or Way Freight. The first name means the train only stops at major towns (Coaldale or Jasper), the second name means it might stop at any town on the route.

I am thinking of simulating a train's run by having it carry out a number of loops on the outer mainline to represent the distance between towns. For example a Train running west from Coaldale to Queenston would actually leave Coaldale running west and then do 3 complete outer loops before switching into the Queenston siding. Travelling from Queenston to Jasper would involve first travelling west until the train is on the outer mainline (behind Distillery Row) and then running west for 5 complete outer loops before switching into the Jasper Yard.

A Train running east from Jasper would stay on the outer mainline for 5 complete loops before switching to the inner mainline (behind Distillery Row) and then on to Queenston. From Queenston the train would enter the outer mainline travelling east and complete 3 outer loops before entering the Coaldale Yard.

The next step will be to try this out. But first I need to connect the duck-under and then clean the outer mainline track.

10:20 PM

The duck-under is in place (this only took a few minutes) and the outer mainline track has been cleaned. Tomorrow I will try some runs over the entire layout.
