There is only one more section in chapter 2 of "The Calculus Lifesaver" and I will have completed the chapter. The last section is about important trigonometric identities. I do not expect this to take too long, and then I hope to have my first look at a book I bought in Calgary a couple of weeks ago called "Mathematica Demystefied".
The last section in chapter 2 is about Trig Identities. Now for a few online notes. |
These follow immediately from the definitions for each term.
At this point it is desirable to switch to hand-written notes as it is too difficult to use the present web authoring languages to convey these equations. But I have now had a look at the remainer of the chapter and I feel that I have a general sense of the equations. I will leave the actual details until I encounter them again while studying calculus.
I am also thinking ahead to using Mathematica. This is one (very good!) alternative set of notational conventions for representing mathematical ideas in a form that is also usable by computer systems. I think a good argument can be made that we should begin using both systems.
I have now completed chapter 2. I will return to "Calculus Know-It-All" tomorrow. Now to have my first look at "Mathematica Demystified". The book cover indicates that it covers versions 6 & 7. I have version 5.1 running under Windows xp on the Mac. Now to see if it makes much of a difference. I am not sure if it makes a difference yet but I have been able to determine that my version is no longer available for an upgrade. I can buy a Home Edition of version 7 for $295. Cdn which can run on Mac OS X. Tempting. But first let's see what happens when I try to use my version with this book. I have had a preliminary look at the first few pages of Hoste and so far everything seems to work as he describes. I have always liked Mathematica and am delighted to be getting back to it. One of my goals will be to relearn how to save a Notebook on the Web so others can view my sessions. I think I should be able to place a link on a page like this and have the notebook appear on the viewers screen. Total time this morning: about 1 hour. |
