Aroma. [3, 6, 8, 9, 19] A personal maid for Bao-yu.

Lin Dai-yu. [2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 16, 17, 19] Young daughter of Lin Ru-hai. She received tutoring from Jai Yu-cun but now she is being brought up by the Jias of Rong-guo mansion.

Xue Bao-chai. [4, 5, 7, 8, 19] Xue Pan's sister.

Bao-yu leaves the family compound and visits Aroma in her home. She indicates that she is thinking of leaving the family and gaining her independence (she is a slave).

Bao-yu then returns home and has a lengthy chat with Dai-yu. Bao-chai joins them.

This chapter gives some insight into the relationships between servants and their masters. At least in the Jai household, the relationship is supportive and helpful.
