BACKPACKING

·         Kalalau Trail (Kauai, Hawaii) -- 1976

The Kalalau Trail on the Hawaiian island of Kauai is the first place I went backpacking.  It is probably one of the most beautiful places on earth.  And the fact that it’s in the tropics makes it a warm place to backpack year-round!

·         The John Muir Trail (California) - 1979

This was my first long backpacking trip.  It was 3 weeks all spent in wilderness.  I was hiking solo.  But by the time this picture was taken at the end of the trip on top of Mt. Whitney (14,495 feet), I was with some guys I had met along the trail.  Boy, a month on the trail without a hot shower really shows!

·         The John Muir Trail (California) - 1982

The Muir Trail was so beautiful I had to do it AGAIN.  Again, here are some folks I met along the way.  This picture was taken on August 29, again, on top of Mt Whitney.  We are in front of the hut. "On top of Mt. Whitney, all covered in snow..." We spent the night huddled in the hut.  This was the morning after a big lightning (and snow) storm. Why is there a metal roof?

·        The John Muir Trail (California) - 1988

I loved the Muir Trail so much I had to do it a THIRD time.  It’s a great place to get away and get your head together.  This time I was hiking with some friends I met on the last trip.  We brought a video camera and made a movie of the trip.  This picture is taken on top of one of the many passes along the trail.  Topping these passes is a great time to drop the backpacks and rest.
