Lightning talks

Lightning talks are similar to Pecha Kucha or Ignite in that it involves a fast-paced presentation style for delivering concise messages. Each presenter will display 10 slides automatically advanced for a total of 5 minutes (30 seconds for each slide). The purpose of bringing in the lightning talk style is to allow a large number of experts and professionals to showcase their research and practice in an entertaining and accessible way. The targeted audience is parents, teachers, early childhood educators, immigration service workers, and any other interested individuals or groups. The lightning talks session is scheduled on a Friday night, which is a convenient time for such a public event. We will strive to create a relaxing and enjoyable environment with food and music, in hopes of engaging participants and the audience in a comfortable and informal interaction. These talks will bring academics and the target audiences closer toward the common goals they aim to achieve. The key to prepare a lightning talk is not to include too much information. You’ll only have time to make one or at the most two points. Use lots of visuals, limit text to one or two sentences each slide. Also use the language that would be accessible to the general public. When you prepare the slides, keep in mind the following questions: What is the most important and pressing message that I would like to inform the public? And why is that important? Can I deliver the message in a more entertaining way?
