Setting up Evolution as a Microsoft Exchange Client at the U of L
This is just a reminder of the settings that work for me here. It is clear from the web that different institutions have very different setups. It may or may not be useful to others elsewhere.
Running as an exchange client outside the firewall, Evolution seems to operate tens of times slower than as an IMAP calendar—to the point that for me at least it is certainly not worth it. I don’t know yet of it runs faster inside or if the problem is, as it appears, that it is a terrific memory hog.
Mail Account Settings
Tab1: Identity.
- All take their obvious values.
Tab2: Identity.
- Server: Microsoft Exchange
- Username: Regular system username (*not* DOMAIN\username)
- OWA URL: https://webexchange.uleth.ca
- Mailbox: daniel.odonnell (*not* DOMAIN\username)
- Authentication type: Evolution filled this in as plain text.
Tab 3: Receiving options.
All as you would expect except
- Global Address List/Active Directory: webexchange.uleth.ca (i.e. without protocol)
I think this is correct as I read somewhere that you were supposed to reuse the OWL without the protocol. I’m not sure if it is working or not, though.

As you would expect or automatically filled in.
Calendar and Tasks.
Everything as you would expect except Free/Busy and Calendar Publishing
Free/Busy
- Default Free Busy Server/ Template: webexchange.uleth.ca/%u
Publish Calendar
Select Edit or new as a appropriate and use the following:
- Service Type: secure webDAV
- Server: webexchange.uleth.ca
- File: username
- Port: 443
- Username and Password: as you’d expect.
