Finkin, Matthew W., and Robert Post. 2009. For the Common Good: Principles of American Academic Freedom. New Haven [Conn.]: Yale University Press.

This is a classic book, and for good reason. It begins with a brief history of Academic Freedom, starting with its ecclesiastical origins, running through Germany to the U.S. It then breaks down the theory behind American Academic Freedom (as promulgated primarily by the American Association of University Professors, or AAUP) through its 1915, 1940, 1962, and 1970 statements and commentaries. Particularly clear in this account is the rationale for the three part division of Academic Freedom in the AAUP statements — Publication, Teaching, and Extramural — as well as the discussion of the connection (and intersection) between Academic Freedom and the employment relationship in universities.
