Finding and moving off screen applications in Gnome 3/Ubuntu 17.10
I have a strange problem in the gnew gnome windows manager that ships with Ubuntu 17.10: on my three-monitor desktop, application windows occasionally open off screen. I.e. in the following screen shot, they open partially or entirely in the space marked “invisible window” to the left or right of the tall window.
To make matters worse, applications that open like this do it all the time. I.e. once calculator decides to open off screen, it will do it every time you open calculator.
This is clearly a bug (it didn’t happen in Unity), though it looks from my searching like it is a common and old one in Gnome.
I don’t know of a fix. But I did discover how to get the application window back in the visible workspace:
- Select the application you want to move in the task manager
- <alt>+<space> (opens a context menu)
- select move. This moves the application window to where ever you point the cursor.
This isn’t great: really, things should know better than to open off screen. But it does help repair things when they go wrong.
