Making the notes yesterday, it occurs to me that I cam "embellish" this site with a few photos from my previous visits to Kyoto in 1998 and 1999.

This morning was spent trying to create a clearer picture of the major Japanes buddhist sects. Here is my best effort:

As I understand it, the different sects basically differ in the way that they believe that one can attain buddhahood. As with Christianity, the basic beliefs are the same, eminating from the original sutras of Siddhartha Gautama, who became the Buddha "The Enlightened One" In Japan he is called Shakyamini Buddha. Within Mahayana Buddhism there are other buddhas as well. A popular one in Japan is Amida Buddha which is associated with the True land sects.
