Chores: drive to Calgary

Literature: Continue reading "The Mrs. Dalloway Reader".

C. Actual/Notes

7:50 PM The cold weather continues. It has been intermittent showers all day with a high of +8 C. We did manage to buy and plant a dwarf mugo pine yesterday. It looks very nice in our front yard rock garden.

Today was devoted to a trip to Calgary. I was able to visit a model train store where I chatted with one of the employees who gave me a lot of advice - the most important being to delay setting up a DCC system until after I have the overall layout working. I bought a few magazines including one on making scenery. Now to have a close look at my layout and determine what needs to be done first. I am thinking of setting up a web site that chronicles each step.

I was also able to visit a camera store where I purchased a tele conversion lens that should enable me to get better photos of birds. I added a monopod (a tripod with only one leg) so I can hold the camera steady. Now to try this out. I did not see a hard drive for downloading images so will continue to look for options. Sony appears to have a new product that I will look for.

Books: I purchased the following:

  • The Singing Sword by Jack Whyte. This is volume 2 of a 5 volume series about England in 400 AD.
  • The Eagles' Brood by Jack Whyte. This is volume 3.
  • Introducing Mathematics by Ziauddin Sardar et al. (2005)
  • Introducing Fractal Geometry by Nigel Lesmoir-Gordon et al. (2006)
  • The Mobius Strip by Clifford Pickover (2006)
  • The Colossal Book of Short Puzzles and Problems by Martin Gardner (2006).

I then ordered three more books online:

  • The Skystone by Jack Whyte. This is volume 1 of the series.
  • A Rage to Live by Mary Lovell. A biography of Richard Burton.
  • jpod by Douglas Coupland.

Now to develop a reading schedule... I will wait until the first volume of the Jack Whyte novels arrives before beginning those three books (makes sense!).

I want to insert time for my model train activities as well as set up a routine for mathematics while waiting for my books to arrive from Australia.
