5:00 am It is still dark outside, at least looking west. The sky is light to the east.
Technology. I now have a new external hard drive (a Maxtor One Touch III ) 300GB which is rated for about 230,000 JPEG images. It is an interesting metric as the size of a JPEG image is highly variable depending on the resolution of the camera. In any event it should hold quite a few. I also bought a hub with 4 USB ports that should help us easily share printers and scanners between the desk top computer and the laptop. Finally, I bought a Logitech Quickcam for the laptop that is recommended for quality images when using MSN Messenger. Now to get this all set up.
On another topic, Literature, I was able to buy volume 4 of the Max Gallo series of novels on Napoleon.
Top priority is to get my images onto that external hard drive. That will free up a lot of space on the laptop. I should also put my web authoring activities on the drive.
On a totally different plane, we bought 4 wine barrel tubs to put some flowers in. They need to be painted and stained.
I also used the barbeque last evening for the first time since we returned. We had a steak cut for two: it was the thickest steak I have ever seen, about one and half inches thick. It took a low heat and about 40 minutes to cook but the final result was superb - not burned, yet cooked to a medium-well stage.
Flowers arrived from Gayle for Phyllis for mother's day and I made a fruit salad using the basket that was sitting on our cupboard when we arrived back from Australia. It looked really great in Steve's bowl which we were able to bring back without it getting broken. I took a few pictures, but will wait until I get the external hard drive operational before downloading them to the computer and this web site.
Chores: getting caught up
Technology: set up external hard drive and transfer images from laptop.
Literature: begin reading Napoleon: The Immortal of St. Helena (vol. 4)
12:00 PM It has taken all morning to go through the steps of installing the external hard drive (30 minutes) and then backing up the entire laptop (about 2 and a half hours). It took another hour to get the images that are currently on the laptop catalog for the Panasonic digital camera onto the hard drive. That freed up almost 10 GB on the laptop. I still have to go over the images and compare them with the ones on my CDs as something went haywire with the system about 2 months ago and I lost all of the tags for my images. Still, it has been a good start.
8:20 PM We saw a White-crowned Sparrow in our back yard this afternoon. As well as a couple of American Robins and a few House Finches. We have yet to engage in any serious bird watching, but these birds were right in front of us as we were working in the yard.
I have reviewed most of the images for the period Feb 14 - 24 and have set up numerous tags for people, location, and special topics such as birds. Overall a very good start. I am delighted with the software package.
