Rationale for this Course

The following statement was taken from the original proposal for this course that was submitted to the University of Lethbridge in November, 2001, where it was approved.

There has been growing interest in the mathematical background of elementary school teachers. In many cases this focuses on their relatively light exposure to current literature on both pedagogy and on the fundamental ideas underlying elementary school mathematics. This course will attempt to address these issues by examining the recent research literature, reviewing the fundamental concepts, and developing curriculum materials for use in the classroom.
