6:50 am Life

I have made good progress on reviewing my books and deciding which ones to keep and which to give to libraries or to simply throw away into recycling.

At the moment my database shows 2176 non-fiction books and 1002 fiction books. When I retired I made a quick cull of books to give to the university library or the town library. At that time I recall that the total in my two databases was over 4,000. I am making progress.

The first task this morning will be to delete records for those books that I am about to give away. The majority of these will be non-fiction, but I am also planning to give some fiction books to libraries.

The weather forecast is for sunshine for the next week. This will give me an opportunity to finish the work in the backyard. I have now made arrangements where I will move the excess dirt into the lane and a fellow with a bobcat will come and haul it away. This is a long weekend so I have until Tuesday to get the dirt ready for the bobcat.

[Addendum: 11:30 am]

I have completed putting the books that I am removing into 5 separate piles: uni library, Lethbridge library, Milo library, garage sale, and recycling. Updating the database revealed a few normal discrepancies - a few books that I was removing were not in the database, and there are undoubtably some books on my shelves that are also not in the database. I have removed 60 fiction books and 82 non-fiction books. I have also noted a number of books that I have yet to read, and had lost track of on the shelves. They are now much closer to where I sit.

[Addendum: 2:00 PM]

It only took me 2 hours to move all the excess dirt from the backyard to the lane behind our fence. I originally thought it would take between 4 and 6 hours. So much for guessing. Since this is the Labor Day long weekend, it will not be picked up until Tuesday.

[Addendum: 7:00 PM]

I began watching a set of DVDs a few nights ago. I have now seen the first 5 episodes (3 DVDs) of a TV program "The Prisoner" that was very popular in the 1970's. I was fascinated by it then and am enjoying it now.
