A. Morning Musings

7:00 am

With a high of only +24 forecast, today should be positively pleasant. Now for a cuppa.

Mmm. Good. I am still playing with ideas about condensing these pages for printing.

Immediate Description Time

Mathematics Continue ch. 1 of "A Transition to Advanced Mathematics" 1 hr
Mathematics Complete problems 4.22 - 4.26 of "The Humongous Book of Calculus Problems" 1 hr
Mathematics Continue reading "The Black Swan" by Nassim Taleb 1 hr

C. Actual Learning Activities

8:45 am

I have tried copy-and-pasting sections from my web pages (omitting photos, images, tables and notes) for the entire month of January. The result was a 15 page Word document with a minimum of formatting. I also saved the file as a web page ( 2007JanuarySummary ). If I were to maintain this idea, I would end up with about 225 pages at the end of the year. Basically this would be a diary: focusing on my learning activities and providing little additional personal information.

11:00 am

We are back from a very pleasant walk to Starbucks. The cappucinno was dreadful. But it takes one sample to find out whether one wants more. Nope. Next time we will return to Tim Hortons.

1:20 PM

I have created a page of dark black lines that I can place underneath sheets from a package labeled as "Xerox Premium Multipurpose" with a Brightness of 90, 24 lb weight, 800 sheets. My Pelikan M250 Tradition pen with a medium nib writes very well on this paper. I have just tried a one-hour session of calculus problems and am pleased with my technical pen/paper solution.

Mathematics 34

The next section is about the idea of inverse functions. The emphasis at this stage is on the concept rather than on algebraic manipulation.

I think I am finally getting close to the overall approach that I have been striving for. I have finally found the right combination of pen (Pelikan M250, medium nib), paper (Xerox Premium Multipurpose" with a Brightness of 90, 24 lb weight, 800 sheets), and ink (Waterman Florida Blue). I am also using a Pilot Hi-Tecpoint V5 Extra Fine pen with red ink for my corrections and comments.

1:50 PM

It is much cooler this afternoon, the first genuinely cool afternoon in the house in over a month. It is positively refreshing.

4:00 PM

I am back from a quick shopping trip to buy a salmon for the barbeque. Just happened to buy a book that caught my eye:

I have always enjoyed reading books based on the Tao.
