A cold front moved in overnight. The forecast for today is for some wind (30 - 50 km/h) and possible morning showers. A good excuse for a coffee.

C. Actual Learning Activities

6:20 am

The first Learning activity for today is to create weekly and monthly planning tables.

7:30 am

Done. Here is a June Plans web page that contains both a planning table for the remainder of June as well as two tables that indicate the breakdown of these activities across the remaining two weeks.

So far, so good. The exercise has been worthwhile. I have already made a couple of adjustments, both for today as well as for next week. I realize that my Birding activities needs to become a top priority, that one book on XML and CSS can be ignored, and that my Mathematics activities need to be reactivated.

At the moment, the plan for today seems realistic. Now to make that coffee.

9:05

The coffee tastes great.

There are some nuances with CSS. I am still guilty of "old think" instead of "new think". This can cause difficulties as my web site contains a mix of old HTML and new CSS-based XHTML. I ran into some such difficulties when I attempted to validate the June Plans web page. I now have that sorted out, but it required that I learn about class identifiers. That should end my coding efforts for today. The next major task involves reviewing my birds photos from the June 20 trip.

4:50 PM

I have completed editing our photos from our birding trip on June 20 and have created the web page for this trip.

5:00 PM

I have had a quick look at both chapters 6 & 7 of "Teach Yourself XML in 21 Days". Both chapters discuss XML schemas which are the recommended way to describe the structure and grammar of the data that is stored in an XML file.

I can envisage the day when I might want to create such a database file of the birds we have seen, but that day is off in the distant future.

At the moment I want to focus on the next few chapters which discuss the presentation of XML data using Cascading Style Sheets. This is what I need in order to redesign this web page.

The remainder of the day will be devoted to barbequing a salmon and reading a few short stories from "By A Frozen River".
