Title: Splicing and its regulation in mammals and yeast

Abstract: Splicing is an important and intriguing step in the gene expression pathway. It is both and essential step in the expression of many genes, and yet it is subject to regulatory influences that can dramatically alter the fate of the mRNA and the function of the protein that comes from the gene. In addition, splicing allows for interpretation of a given genomic sequence in the form of RNA such that new variations in gene output can be explored without catastrophic loss of gene function. In this presentation I will describe experiments we have done using various methods, that explore the splicing process from fundamental mechanism to the integration of splicing regulation with transcriptional regulation in a relatively simple gene expression program.
