T-stick Performance Software Procedure

General comments

The above PDF illustrates the performance software procedure (i.e., launching and initialising software components) for compositions using the soprano t-stick and kinect input devices. This procedure requires Max, Apple's Logic Pro, Synapse, the Digital Orchestra Toolbox and libmapper mapping components. Additional software components (including the Digital Orchestra Toolbox) are available from D. Andrew Stewart.

MaxMSP patch without pre-recorded audio files (476 KB)

General comments

MaxMSP measures the acoustical properties of the clarinet in real-time in order to control both physical-modelling synthesis and digital signal processing of an internet audio stream. In the former case, the acoustical readings from the clarinet will be mapped to the synthesis parameters of the physical model. In the latter, the audio signal of the clarinet will select sound fragments from the audio stream as well as determine how the audio is processed during playback. Selections of the audio stream can either be realised automatically, via the MaxMSP patch, or selected by another person during the performance. In either case, iRecord needs to be set up properly such that it is recording audio in one-minute segments, with the file names: 001.aiff; 002.aiff; 003.aiff; etc.. In addition, the recorded audio must be in the file search path of the MaxMSP application. Alternatively, the MaxMSP patch comes with pre-recorded audio files; therefore, the piece can also be performed without a connection to the internet.

General comments

Biameral mind, prologue, is a solo composition for clarinet and live-electronics. During the performance, the acoustical properties of the clarinet are measured in real-time in order to control both physical-modelling synthesis and signal processing of a buffered audio content. In the first case, the acoustical readings from the clarinet are mapped to the synthesis parameters of the physical model. In the latter, the audio signal of the clarinet selects sound fragments from the buffer as well as determining how the audio is processed during playback.
