• Paul Vasey & Francisco Gómez were back in Juchitán, Mexico, during November and December collecting data on Zapotec men, women and muxe. Watch for our first Zapotec muxe article early in 2017!
• Paul Vasey’s “Introduction to the Special Section: The Puzzle of Sexual Orientation: What is it and How Does it Work?” is now available online at the website for the journal, Archives of Sexual Behavior.
• The Mexican newspaper, El Imparcial, reports on my Japanese macaque research in their article, Animales homosexuales ¿existen o no?
• A new article by Doug VanderLaan, Lanna Petterson & Paul L. Vasey entitled, “Elevated kin-directed altruism emerges in childhood and is linked to feminine gender expression in Samoan fa’afafine: A retrospective study” is now available online at the website for the journal, Archives of Sexual Behavior.
• Vasey Lab members enjoyed their 2016 retreat in Juchitán, Mexico, where they attended a four day festival honoring the city’s muxe citizens. Here are some photos.
• A new article by Nöelle Gunst, Aden M. Forteau, Shawn Philbert, Paul L. Vasey & Jean-Baptiste Leca entitled “Decline in Population Density and Group Size of Mona Monkeys in Grenada” has been publish in the journal, Primate Conservation.

• Paul Vasey travelled to Studio City, California, to film an interview with the television journalist, Katie Couric, for an upcoming documentary. Here’s a photo of Paul, Katie and the producer, Gabriel Rotello. Watch for the documentary in 2017.

• We’re Not Quite Born this Way, Jesse Singal’s New York Magazine piece on my recently co-authored Psychological Science in the Public Interest article, “Sexual Orientation, Controversy, and Science”.
• Back in San Francisco for a Grace Jones concert and I checked out the fabulous exhibit in the Museum of African Diaspora, Dandy Lion: (Re)Articulating Black Masculine Identity. Here’s a photo I took at the MoAD’s Grace Jones exhibit.

• Paul Vasey and Doug VanderLaan attended the third-gender “wakashu” art exhibit at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, Ontario.
• Paul Vasey was the external examiner for Malvina Skorska’s PhD dissertation defence at Brock University in St. Catherines, Ontario. Here is the picture of the newly minted Dr. Skorska with her proud supervisor, Dr. Anthony Bogaert.
• A new article by Lanna J. Petterson, Chelsea R. Wrightson, & Paul L. Vasey entitled, “Recalled Gendered Behavior in Childhood: A Comparison of Androphilic Men, Gynephilic Men, and Androphilic Women in Japan” is now available online at the website for the journal, Archives of Sexual Behavior.
• Francisco Gómez was awarded a School of Graduate Studies Travel Award to attend the Canadian Sex Research Forum in Québec City.
• A new article by Scott Semenyna and Paul L. Vasey entitled, “The Relationship between Adult Occupational Preferences and Childhood Gender Nonconformity among Samoan Women, Men and Fa’afafine” is now in print and available online at the website for the journal, Human Nature.
• Paul Vasey was the external examiner for Morag Yule’s PhD dissertation defence at UBC in Vancouver. Here’s a picture of the newly minted Dr. Yule with her proud supervisor, Dr. Lori Brotto.
• Paul Vasey spent the first week in July working with National Geographic photographer, Lynn Johnson, in Samoa. Look for Lynn’s beautiful photographs in the January 2017 issue of National Geographic magazine.
• A new article by Jean-Baptiste Leca, Noëlle Gunst, Amanda N. Pelletier, Paul L. Vasey, Charmalie A.D. Nahallage, Kunio Watanabe and Michael A. Huffman entitled “A multidisciplinary view on cultural primatology: Behavioral innovations and traditions in Japanese macaques” was published in the journal, Primates.
• I’m very proud to announce that Scott Semenyna was awarded the International Academy of Sex Researcher’s Student Research Development Award. Congratulations Scott and well deserved!
• Scott Semenyna gave a great talk at the International Academy of Sex Researchers conference in Malmo, Sweden, on familial clustering and population prevalence of transgender male androphilia in Samoa and in the Istmo region of Oaxaca, Mexico. He’s a photo.
• A popular article entitled, Des femelles gorilles, homosexuelles pour le plaisir?, in Science & Avenir discusses Paul Vasey’s research on female homosexual behavior in Japanese macaque.
• A new article by Fangfang Li, Drew Rendall, Paul L. Vasey, Melissa Kinsman, Amanda Ward-Sutherland & Giancarlo Diano entitled “The development of sex/gender-specific /s/ and its relationship to gender identity in children and adolescents” was published in the Journal of Phonetics.
• It was great fun working with science writer Robin Marantz Henig in Samoa. Look for Robin’s National Geographic magazine article on boys, girls (and fa’afafine) in the January 2017 issue of the magazine.
• I’m extremely proud to announce that my doctoral student, Scott Semenyna, won both the Governor General’s Gold Medal (for best Master’s thesis at the University of Lethbridge across all disciplines) and the School of Graduate Studies Medal of Merit (for best Master’s thesis in the Sciences).
• Debra Soh discusses the Vasey lab’s research on feederism in her Men’s Health article, “1 in 6 People Has A Sexual Fetish.”
• TIME magazine covered the Vasey lab’s Samoan research on birth order and sexual orientation in a generous two-page spread that can be found in their supplement, The Science of Siblings.

• Here I go again. Congratulations to both my doctoral students, Lanna J. Petterson and Scott Semenyna who were each awarded $20,000 Board of Governors Research Chair Graduate Awards from the University of Lethbridge. These guys are on a winning streak. No surprise there.
• A HUGE congratulations to both my doctoral students, Lanna J. Petterson and Scott Semenyna who were award extremely prestigious Social Science & Humanities Research Council of Canada Joseph-Armand Bombardier CGS D3 Doctoral Scholarships to conduct their cross-cultural research on sexuality. I’m extremely proud of both of them.
• It was a pleasure to attend the 2016 Moving Trans* History Forward conference in Victoria, Canada. Highlight of the conference: Getting to reconnect with my friend, Dallas Denny. Here’s a photo. Dallas gave an amazing talk on who took the Casa Susanna photos. It was a tale that involved the Hollywood actress Joan Bennet, a daytime soap opera about vampires, one of Johnny Carson’s cameramen, and a multimillionaire New Yorker (for real).
• Paul Vasey was interviewed for an article on animal homosexual behavior, “Out in the Wild,” which appeared in the online magazine, Lateral.
• A new article by Geoff MacFarlane and Paul L. Vasey entitled “Promiscuous Primates engage in Same-Sex Genital Interactions” has been published in the journal, Behavioural Processes.
• New Target Article Feature in the Archives of Sexual Behavior.
• Paul L. Vasey was appointed an Associate Editor of the Archives of Sexual Behavior.
• Beards, sexism, and attractiveness in hipsters. Another popular article that mentions my cross-cultural research with Barnaby Dixson on men’s beards, which was published in Behavioral Ecology.
• Call for nominations for the Ira and Harriet Reiss Award for theoretical articles and books on human sexuality published in 2015.
• Paul Vasey was interviewed for an article on homosexual behavior in geese in Nautilus magazine.
• Doug VanderLaan’s 2016 plenary address on our Samoan research was described in the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality newsletter as “Theoretically grounded and backed with a ton of empirical data.”
• Francisco Gómez and I completed our second fieldtrip to Juchitán. It was was a huge success. Here we are having a celebratory dinner with some of our Juchitán friends. Stay tuned for Vasey lab articles on the muxes coming soon!
• My Japanese macaque research was cited by activists aiming to correct the homophobic remarks of a Filipino congressman. Check out the coverage in the International Business Times, DavaoToday and Forbes.

• A new article by Lanna J. Petterson, Barnanby W. Dixson, Anthony C. Little & Paul L. Vasey entitled “Reconsidering Male Bisexuality: Sexual Activity Role and Sexual Attraction in Samoan Men Who Engage in Sexual Interactions with Fa’afafine” has been published in the journal, Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity.
• Paul Vasey was invited by the University of Lethbridge Student’s Union to give a talk entitled “Welcome to the Ancestral Mating Environment”.
• Francisco Gómez gave a great talk on recalled childhood separation anxiety and male sexual orientation in Isthmus Zapotec men and muxes at the the Society for Personality and Social Psychology’s Sexuality preconference.
