July 2025

Thamara passes her Ph.D. Transfer Examination becoming the group's newest Ph.D. student - congratulations Thamara!!

  The Hayes Group welcomes the newest member of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Assistant Professor Stephanie Schneider!
  William Walter-Enudi joins the group as part of the Highschool Youth Researcher Summer Program (HYRS) - welcome!!
  Paul hosts his departmental colleagues for a backyard potluck.
June 2025

Professor Makoto Yamashita (Institute of Science Tokyo (formerly Tokyo Institute of Technology)), Paul's host for his Long-term Invitational JSPS Fellowship, visits the department and delivers an outstanding seminar. Paul and his family greatly enjoyed reuniting with Makoto and his wife Natsuko and hope they return again soon!

May 2025 Paul attends and Edward attend his Ph.D. convocation. Congrats Dr. Hsiang! The following day Paul and David attend his convocation.
  David is accepted into the Masters of Chemical Engineering (specialization in Energy and Environment) program at the University of Calgary and is also offered an internship - congratulations!
  Paul hosts 11 high school students from the Horizon School Division in the lab for a tour and demonstration.
  Emily and Thamara host two middle school students in the lab as part of Operation Minerva: STEM Education and Mentorship for Girls.
April 2025 David and Jerrica give their final Independent Studies presentations to the group.
  The group had a great end-of-semester dinner at the Kingsmen Ale House.
March 2025 Paul receives a grant from the University of Lethbridge Research Fund!
 

Professor George Shimizu (University of Calgary) visits the department and delivers a research seminar. George was a member of Paul's Ph.D. Supervisory Committee and was extremely supportive as he sought an academic position. Hence, Paul had a fantastic evening hosting him at his home.

  Jason Masuda (Saint Mary's University) and Jay Wickenden (UBC) visit the department for a site visit as part of our application to the Canadian Society of Chemistry for re-accreditation of our B.Sc. in Chemistry. Thanks for your dedication and hard work!
  Edward's Can. J. Chem. paper accepted!
  Congratulations to Edward for successfully defending his Ph.D. thesis! A very sincere thank-you is extended to Prof. Hisako Hashimoto of Tohoku University for serving as the External Examiner!
  Edward and Jackson's Dallton Transactions manuscript accepted - congratulations!
February 2025 Edward submits his Ph.D. thesis!
  Emily receives Dr. Barbara June Whitlock Chemistry Scholarship - congratulations!
  Paul organizes and participates in the second annual "Chemistry Day". A group of 16 ambitious grade 11 and 12 students from Catholic Central High Scool spent a day in the department participating in educational activities and demonstrations.
  Jackson and Edward submit manuscript to Dalton Transactions!
January 2025 Edward's manuscript is accepted in Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. - Congratulations on an outstanding paper!!
  Jerrica Thompson joins the group to undertake an Independent Study - welcome!!
  Edwatd submits paper on the first group 9 silylyne to the special issue of the Canadian Journal of Chemistry that Paul is orrganizing in honour of his undergraduate supervisor Steve Westcott.
  Edward's Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. manuscript denoted as a "Hot Paper"! It's already been viewed >600 views!
