If you have been following the news the last few years, you probably know some people in Uplands have been having big trouble with water in their basement and sump pumps constantly working even in dry periods . The city fathers are baffled. They are now hiring a consultant. A litte history lesson would have been a lot cheaper. You geocachers should have a lot of fun following this story as it continues to develop. Here’s my theory.
The map "Coal Mines of the Lethbridge district 1874 - 1982" shows that much of north Lethbridge sits above tunnels from underground coal mines. Galt Mines Nos. 1, 3 and 6 (The latter at Hardieville close to the Uplands area) were all prone to flooding. When the river rose the mines filled with water which was constantly being pumped out so the mines could be worked. Nobody's pumping them out now so guess what — they are full of water. (Newspaper clipping - January 8, 1951)
As I remember it, in the 1950s the Chinook Regional Hospital was going to be built just north of today's Galt Museum but was moved to its present location fearing problems from the mine tunnels in that area. For the next 50 years the area was kept as a parking lot only but has now been built on. Ignoring history can come back to haunt us.

PLANNING
The initial focus was a puzzle cache that came out a few days ago. I finally solved it last night at 7 PM. I made a quick trip to the cache area but it was too dark to see the container in the spruce tree so I came back this morning and tried again. Since I was on the north side of Lethbridge I added 3 other caches to my plan and then headed out at 8:00 am.
OUTCOME
8:27 am. This was the 2nd search. I was looking for a bright blue pill container and was not disappointed. Here is my posting to the geocaching.com website:
Another nice history cache. TFTC. Here are 2 photos:
