GC28XJW Huff Oil Refinery Site N 49° 40.444 W 112° 48.108Difficulty 1; Terrain 1.5; size micro; Creator: smartee Date First Hidden: 5/20/2010 Date Last Found: 6/6/2010 LethbridgeDescription This should make you think twice about where you build. In the early part of the last century searching for oil in southern Alberta was a popular pastime. Companies were started and stocks sold galore. Turner Valley for a time was the largest producer in the British Empire. With smaller wells scattered throughout southern Alberta and northern Montana the Huff Refinery was set up and running in the 1930s. By 1960 the hope for a big oil find in southern Alberta had vanished and Safeway was preparing to build this 2 million dollar shopping Centre. A few years later the media began to question whether the polluted land might be causing health problems for those who now live in the area. The concerns died down but maybe people just forgot the history. Hint Comments
PLANNING
While enjoying a pleasant cup of coffee with TeamDJM last night, it was suggested I try to find GC29DCD which was created while we were in Jasper. I then added this cache to my list that was also created while we were away. Then I headed out at 8:30 am to try my hand. I remembered to bring GeeCee, my geocaching bear and travelling companion with me. He had been hibernating all winter, but finally woke up, and was eager to find some caches and berries.
OUTCOME
I drove up to the parking area for this cache and spent another 10 minutes examining the area before finally finding the cache. As expected, the container was a blue pill bottle (all of smartees containers have been blue pill bottles). Here is my posting to the geocaching.com website:
Thanks for the description. SL. TFTC. Here are a few photos.
