C. P. Snow wrote an influential paper called "The Two Cultures" as a concern about the trend in Victorian England away from science and mathematics.

With the Industrial Revolution there was a flip toward an emphasis on utility, engineering and (recently) computing.

In 1999, literacy is valued, whereas numeracy is viewed more ambivalently (many people are proud to declare their ineptitude with numbers).

"Genuine mathematics , then, its methods and its concepts, by contrast with soulless calculation, constitutes one of the finest expressions of the human spirit (p. xxi)" Peter Hilton in the Foreward to Mathematics: From the Birth of Numbers.

Mathematics should be appreciated as art, while recognized as useful.

The important point is to play with the ideas. Technology should be used to avoid the tedious work, and to permit the exploration of ideas that are otherwise inaccessible.
