A Whistling Woman by A. S. Byatt.

Chapter IX (p. 133 - 147)

Setting

Oxford, 1968

Characters

Frederica

Action

Frederica's pilot television program with her as the host starts very strongly and immediately becomes popular.

"Each week three things were discussed - an object, an idea, and a person, living or dead. The intention was to avoid the normal categories of journalism - current affairs, politics, arts, science, popular titbits, satire - and mix these in new ways." [p. 135]

"It was fortunate because the two very clever men, at ease with the camera and themselves, ..." [p. 137]

"... she liked the sense they gave her of things - endless things - to be discovered and discussed." [p. 137]

"Those two delighted in the motions of their minds like Keat's sparrows full of themselves, springing on the gravel." [p. 137]

"I don't want to act. I want to think. Clarity. Curiosity. Curiouser and curiouser." [p. 137]

Comment

This chapter is much like the previous two: it focuses on one person with virtually no interaction with other characters.

I love the three categories of an object, an idea and a person. It reminds a bit of Jeopardy, and also of Google and Yahoo.

The observation of the two men being at ease with themselves is very much like what I was reading yesterday about the Tao.

Thinking and curiosity: a passion for learning - "Almost in the beginning was curiosity." (Isaac Asimov)
