A Whistling Woman by A. S. Byatt.
Chapter VI (p. 79 - 89)
Setting | Oxford, 1968 |
Characters | Wijnnobel: the Vice-Chancellor |
Action | They discuss the upcoming Mind and Body conference as well as the posters proclaiming a new anti-university. Neither seems to be very concerned. Tewfell joins them and they discuss a few trivial matters. |
Comment | Life on campus is normal and boring. |
Setting | Oxford. 1968 |
Characters | Greg Tod |
Action | Eva asks to teach courses at the anti-university but they decline, indicating that she isn't welcome. Jonty arrives later and says they should have welcomed Eva - she may prove useful as one who knows something about the university administration. Jonty visits Eva the next morning and apologizes for the previous cold reception and says she is very welcome to join the group. |
Comment | One can see a couple of crises forming for the future: one involving a conflict between the two institutions and one involving the Wijnnobels' marriage. So far there is no link between these characters and the rest of the characters in the story, but that may change. Jonty appears to be the important person in the anti-university movement. |
