Monday August 28, 2006 6:20 am Beckley, West Virginia. Day 13 of our trip to Virginia.
A. Morning Musings
6:20 am No internet connectivity this morning. This will be the last day of our drive east. Sometime this afternoon we will arrive at Williamsburg. The drive has been very easy and pleasant. We have had a perfect balance between driving and birding and are still fully rested and ready for more. The one surprise while driving was primarily in Minnesota and Iowa where everyone seemed to stay within the speed limit and where you would often find slow cars in the left lane. The big surprise was in the restaurants where we have generally been disappointed in the quality of the food. The surprise in the accommodation was discovering the discount coupons that were available at the information centers when one enters a new state. The weather has been ideal for driving. Yesterday is the only day where we experienced a light rain, and that for only a couple of hours in the morning. The American interstate system of highways is excellent for getting from one place to another. We have not seen as many birds as we had hoped, but that may not be too surprising as we have only been on trails for an hour or so before moving on. From a sightseeing perspective the surprise was the Amana colonies in Iowa which we were not aware existed and which we thoroughly enjoyed. Internet connectivity has generally been excellent, this being the first hotel that said they had it, but it wasn't working.
