Saturday August 26, 2006 4:00 PM Frankfort, Kentucky. Day 11 of our trip to Virginia. Sunrise 7:04 Sunset 8:18 Hours of daylight: 13:14

A. Morning Musings

4:00 PM 87 F (31 C) Grey sky with scattered clouds.

We left Bethalto, Illinois this morning at 8 am, drove across the southern tip of Indiana, and are now in Kentucky.

B. Plan

Drive from Bethalto, Illinois to Frankfort, Kentucky.

C. Actual/Notes

4:10 PM We loaded up the car in a light rain and headed east. We had no difficulty finding the Interstate and we were on our way. The rain stopped about 10 am but the air remained very humid and hot. The sky was grey and difficult to read. By 11 am we were in Indiana. There was still some corn and soy bean crops but the land was becoming hilly and rocky with more trees than farms. Overall the farms and towns looked much poorer than what we have seen so far. At 2 PM we entered Kentucky at Louisville and we discovered we had lost another hour to time zones, presumably at the Kentucky border. We pulled into Frankfort, the capital of Kentucky at 3:15 PM. This time we used a coupon that we picked up at the rest area just inside Kentucky and are staying at a Best Western motel which also has wireless Internet in the room. The only time we have not had a connection is when we are staying with relatives! There is a nearby bird sanctuary but it closes at 5 so we will try to see it tomorrow morning (weather permitting) before continuing east.

The weather precluded any good photos, but we did take a few when we stopped to eat our sandwiches shortly after entering Kentucky.

Now to find a good restaurant...

8:00 PM We found a Chinese restaurant that had a promising ad in a tourist brochure but it turned out to be one of the poorest Chinese meals we could ever remember having. These things happen on a trip.

10:00 PM I finished reading "The Marriage of Figaro". It was a true delight. Very fast paced and an intricate plot. Great fun. However I have been surprised that there were no real overtones about the social situation in France in the years preceding the French revolution. I was expecting some strong critique of the nobility but instead I found a timeless play on the situations we get into when we try to combine sex with deception. I would like to see this play performed and will keep my eyes open to see if it is on somewhere.
