In 1900 Arthur Evans began his excavations on Crete at a place called Knossis, where he had actually purchased much of the land site he was interested in. This was based on earlier excavations by the German millionaire Heinrich Schliemann (1822 - 1890) who had first uncovered ancient ruins that were Troy. [Until that time, most people considered Troy to be a fictional place] The ruins at Knossis were spectacular and it wa soon realized that they were of a civilization that pre-dated the early Greek civilization at Mycenea. This newly discovered civilization was called Minoan, after the Cretan worship of the Minotaur (part bull, part man). {or did it refer to King Minos?} |
