  Magellan
1520 The Spanish explorer Ferdinand Magellan discovered a strait at the southern tip of South America. This had the obvious effect of finding an oceanic path for circumnavigating the globe. Apparently it also gave rise to the idea of there being a similar path in the north (the north-west passage).
