  Hearne
1771 Samuel Hearne travels up the Copprmine River to the shore of the Arctic Ocean.

  • Hearne leaves Prince of Wales Fort (now Churchill) on the south-west shore of Hudson's Bay in December 1770.
  • 6 months later, on July 13, 1771, Hearne reaches the Coppermine River.
  • 4 days later they arrive at the shore of the Arctic Ocean.
  • On return trip, he crosses Great Slave Lake (frozen over).
  • He arrives back at Prince of Wales Fort in June 1772.
