GCHD2T Surfin' N.S.B. N 29° 02.309 W 080° 53.725Difficulty 2.5; Terrain 1; virtual; Creator: enCompassbill Date First Hidden: 12/27/2003 Date Last Found: 02/13/2011 urbanDescription This is a virtual cache that will take you to a scenic spot on New Smyrna Beach (N.S.B.). The difficulty is a 2.5... as a camera is required to prove your find! New Smyrna Beach was originally inhabited by Timucuan Indians. In 1767, Dr. Andrew Turnbull settled the land named after Smyrna (now Izmir), Turkey, his wife's birthplace. If you get a chance visit the ruins of his never completed home at our Turnbull's Palace cache. Little did he know that this area would become a "hot spot" for surfing in Florida. The historic Flagler Avenue (named after Henry Flagler) will lead you from the north causeway crossing over the Indian River onto New Smyrna's beachside. Flagler Avenue is home to local shops and cafes, and a popular beach front access area known for excellent surfing. This cache pays homage to enCompassbill's many hours in the surf. At this location you will find a monument dedicated to early surfers of the area. Because this is the hometown of enCompassbill and the spot on the beach where he first learned to surf, this cache has special meaning. To get credit for this cache... 1. you must submit a photo of yourself with your GPSr at the monument 2. post a surf report (size of the surf and water conditions the day you visit the cache). If you have trouble with that one... just look on any of the lifeguard towers nearby... or stop by one of the surfshops on Flagler Avenue. Conditions the day of posting the cache: 2-3 feet, semi-glassy with fair form. We hope you enjoy the monument and view of N.S.B.!
