1830 Stevens ch 1: rivers provided the main transportation links through the dense forests. Halifax, Montreal & Quebec were the main settlements.
1832 Royal assent to make a railway from Lake Champlain to the River St. Lawrence
1832-1864 Stevens ch 2: first railways were simply portages around rapids and water falls. Champlain & St. Lawrence RR, Montreal & Lachine RR, Carillon & Grenville RR.
1836 Official opening of the Champlain and St. Lawrence RR
1828-1852 Stevens ch 3: idea of a Main Line to connect all of British North America
1852 Grand Trunk Railway incorporated (GTR) - primarily Quebec and Ontario
1853 Great Western Railway (GWR) incorporated - an Ontario railway
