Game 5 of the Stanley Cup final between Vancouver and Boston is tonight, in Vancouver. The best of seven series is currently tied 2 - 2.
7:40 am Science
A very pleasant way to begin the morning: continuing to read "Quantum Man: Richard Feynman's Life in Science". The latest chapters bring out the importance of symmetry in the study of sub-atomic particles and highlight the special symmetry associated with mirrors and the left-right distinction. The book I bought last week by John Conway, "The Symmetries of Things", will be even more interesting now.
I also enjoy reading from the iPad2. The backlit screen is very comfortable in a dimly lit room. I continue to make good use of the yellow highlighting feature.
11:00 am Geocaching
I put 3 geocaches into my GPS and began walking in the downtown Granby area.
- GC2EXXX Au centre du coeur de Granby
- This was my first search in Granby. Since it was rated a 3 in difficulty I was not sure if I would find it. However I quickly walked to the coordinate area where I noticed a small plaque with the same Roman numeral as in the hint. I then began by touching a small disc on the side of the plaque and it moved, a good sign. I thought it was a small magnet but it turned out to be the cap on a tube that fit into an opening that was originally used for a key. When I pulled it out, the log was rolled around the tube. I then tried for the other 2 caches but in both cases there were muggles right near the caches sites so I settled for 1 find out of 1 search.
This brings my Quebec total to 15 and my global total to 982.
3:00 PM Science
I have finished reading "Quantum Man: Richard Feynman's Life in Science". I enjoyed this book and now have a much better appreciation for why he is revered by modern physicists. He was truly a Leonardo da Vinci in terms of the variety and depth of his understanding within physics. The title of the book is well chosen: his contributions to quantum theory were pervasive, even by today's standards.
Here is the final highlighted sentence from my iPad2.
"But accomplishment was not his purpose! It was learning about the world. He felt the fun lay in discovering something for himself." [p. 314]
11:00 PM
Final score: Vancouver 1 Boston 0. Vancouver now leads the best of seven series 3 games to 2. The next game is in Boston on Monday.
