2009 Daley Log
Page 12
I have ignored doing any mathematics for 2 days. This is not the way to get ahead. I need more mental discipline. Mornings are an excellent time for this.
It had become clear to me that I should adopt a two-prong approach. One is to continue with the calculus. But I need a second emphasis that focuses on pre-calculus mathematics and skills. My last session illustrated a weakness with my understanding of logarithms and trigonometry.
An excellent book, which I have used before, is the one by Jack Weiner (2005) called "The Mathematics Survival Kit". I am going to begin this book at the beginning, again.
It has also become clear to me that I need to do mathematics on a regular basis or I forget it. This is a variation on the theme of repetition and practice. I need to use it. It is much like doing crossword puzzles, or any other kind of activity (e.g. using a cell-phone, or staying in shape).
The first chapter is on "Factoring: A Product of Practice" |
I am able to follow the three examples provided. But I would not have been able to simply do them without looking at the worked out examples. Now to try the two exercises on the following page. |
I was able to understand the examples and had no difficulties with the exercises. But without looking at the examples, I would not have been able to do the exercises. This is a matter of memory and being familiar with a number of basic algebraic equalities. Total time this morning: about 1 hour. |
