A. Morning Musings

5:50 am It is +3 C with a high forecast of +21 C.

Here are the news.

CBC Headline: Petawawa-based Soldier Killed In Afghanistan Offensive

This is a repeat of yesterday's headline, this time giving the identity of the slain soldier.

Canadian Headline: see above

Australian Headline: (from The Australian): $1 bn Rail Logjam Hits Exports

The bottleneck at one of Australia's biggest coal ports is costing mining companies more than $1 billion a year, threatening hundreds of jobs in the industry and risking the future of exports to key Asian customers. It warns that the coal chain in central Queensland "is currently in a crisis which has the potential to cost the Queensland coal economy over $1 billion in revenue and additional costs in 2007 alone". It describes the "poor performance" as being of extreme concern, and blames most of the shortcomings on "QR causes" arising from locomotive faults and cancellation of trains due to a lack of crews. "The multiplier effect of this situation on the overall Queensland economy is difficult to estimate, but it is undoubtedly substantial," it says. The documents and investigations by The Weekend Australian show the inability of QRNational, QR's freight arm, to consistently provide manpower, locomotives and wagons is largely responsible for the backlog. I would think that a news item like this would likely go a long way to solving the problem as it can quickly become a major embarrassment to the state government.
