A. Morning Musings

5:15 am I do not have internet connectivity so there is no news or weather to begin the day. There is something restful about this.

Some of my other standard feedback loops are inactive as well. I did not weigh myself this morning. My daily log for keeping track of my calories was very approximate as both lunch and dinner were restaurant meals.

We have a few chores scheduled for the day: recycling cans & bottles, mounting a large mirror in the dining room, and assembling a dining room table. Other than that I should be able to relax and read. One challenge will be to not put on any weight during the next few days. I am not expecting to actually lost any, but it would be nice if I didn't go backwards. On the other hand, this is a weekend to enjoy, so I can recover any lost ground when we return to Lethbridge.

During the early morning, before anyone else gets up, I can either read (I have both "The Big Why" and Alice Munro's "Runaway" with me), go through more of the tutorial for the 3rd PlanIt software, begin editing my iPhoto files for 2006, or read about some of the other features that iPhoto has. I have yet to try some of the options such as slide shows with my 2005 images.

Sitting back for a moment and thinking about major activities (i.e. activities that will take more than a few sessions) that are staring me in the face, I have:

  • Becoming proficient with iPhoto software
  • Becoming proficient with 3rd PlanIt software
  • Editing 2006 photos in iPhoto
  • Installing DCC on model train layout
  • Becoming proficient with cell phone (this is not yet part of my life) (maybe this is a good thing?)
  • Learning to play GO at something better than a beginner level
  • Learning to draw!! (I keep saying this, yet I have yet to put a pencil to paper).
  • Continue to play with mathematics.
  • Continue to read literature.
  • Continue to engage in bird watching activities.
Now to have a serious look at the iPhoto 5 book.

Technology Notes

6:40 am I am determined to work may way through the book "iPhoto 5 The Missing Manual" by David Pogue & Derrick Story (2005). I not only want to learn all of the features of the software, but I am hoping to learn a few new ideas about digital photography in general.

The book is divided into 4 main sections:

  • Part One: Digital Cameras
  • Part Two: iPhoto Basics
  • Part Three: Meet Your Public
  • Part Four: iPhoto Stunts

Although I could immediately begin by simply typing some chapter titles and then add important points, I am going to try using my MindManager software and see if that provides an added advantage.

Here is the basic map:

The chapters that look to be the most valuable are 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10 and 14. We shall see.

I have expanded the first chapter to indicate the important points.

  • Being aware of the speed of a memory card is a relatively new issue. Some peripheral devices (such as my Epson P-3000 image storage device) can only handle memory cards with a speed below 10 MB/sec. This is not discussed in the book.
  • I really should buy a second battery!!
  • I have yet to fully understand the manual controls on my camera. There is further information on this in the next chapter in the book. There is also the manual that came with the camera.
  • I have yet to try the burst mode or the movie mode.
  • I also need to see if panorama mode is a software issue or a camera issue
  • I have yet to see if I should install any additional Panasonic software on the Mac. The camera automatically downloads images to iPhoto so I haven't pursued this.

SUMMARY of the session: I am now oriented and making progress. A good start. I should have done this a year ago! 8:15 am

Here are a few images taken later in the day when I was experimenting with the settings on the digital camera:
