6:30 am It is -6 C at the moment with a high of -1 C forecast.

Here are the news.

CBC Headline: Victims' Families Outraged at Pickton Trial Subpoenas

This refers to the beginning of the trial of Robert Pickton who is accused of murdering 6 women in Vancouver. He is actually accused of murdering many more, but this trial is only for 6 of them. The outrage is because, since they are subpoened, they will be unable to attend the trial and hear the testimony first-hand. The trial has attracted much media attention, both because of the number of women he is accused of killing as well as for the estimated length of the trial (about a year to hear all of the evidence). He was charged in 2002 and it has already taken 5 years for the trial to begin. I think there is something seriously wrong with our legal system that requires a trial of this length. The real winners will be the lawyers, again.

Australian Headline (from The Sydney Morning Herald - The Australian does not update their website on the weekend): Legionnaires Outbreak Grows

Three more cases have been reported, bringing to seven the number of cases reported in the last four days in NSW. Previous cases have been linked to the Circular Quay area on December 31, but one of these last three does not have that connection.

Technology Notes

7:10 am Yesterday, while reading the travel book "Passage to Juneau" by Jonathan Raban I came across a reference to a tape cassette of Mozart's clarinet quintet in A, with Gervase de Peyer on clarinet.

I tried looking on the iTunes website for this and found both the recording and the album containing this piece. The 30-second preview was very pleasant. Now to see if i can figure out how to purchase it and get in on my iPod. This will be another first for me.

The first step is to open iTunes.

The second step is to activate my account. Easy.

The third step is to click on the Buy button for the album that I want to download: "Mozart and Brahms: Clarinet Quintets".

The actual download for the complete CD was about 4 minutes.

I am now listening to the first selection. Wonderful.

SUMMARY of the session: I am amazed at what I don't know. Mozart, yes, but Gervase de Peyer is new to me. I am also in awe of the entire sequence: reading a book - note mention of music - search iTunes for CD using name of performer - find it - set up account - download music - listen. Incredible! 7:45 am

Recipe of the Week 03

Pork Sausage with Apricots

January 20

Recipe Notes

12:50 PM Although the idea is to describe one new recipe each week, since I began late, I will add one of our "stand-bys". This will bring me up-to-date.

Ingredients (serves 2)

7 pork sausages The number can vary but 7 is exactly half of a regular package at the store. It also is the perfect number for cooking eggs (see Steps section below).
2 medium eggs
1 can (398 mL/14 oz liq) apricot halves

Steps

1
Coat bottom of frying pan with spray canola oil.
2
Cook pork sausages on medium-high heat, turning frequently, until brown on all sides.
3
Reduce heat to low-medium.
4
Rearrange sausages to form two squares. Break an egg into each square. Add apricots along side.
5
Cover and cook until eggs are done.
6
Eat with a fresh cup of coffee.
