April 13, 2005 Visit to Rocky Creek Dam near Lismore NSW.
This was one of our first focused birding trips. Phyllis planned to visit 3 different sites: Rocky Creek Dam, Jabiru Geneebeinga Wetlands and McMohon’s Lagoon. We saw a total of 22 different species that we were able to identify, including 9 new birds.
At Rocky Creek Dam we saw a Mistletoebird [10:20 am], numerous Sulfur-crested Cockatoo [10:30], 2 Noisy Miners [10:40], 2 Eurasian Coots [10:50], 2 Dusky Moorhens [10:55], 3 Magpies [11:05], 2 Blue-billed Ducks [11:25], 1 White-faced Heron [11:26], 1 Azure Kingfisher [11:40], 2 Dusky Moorhens [11:42], 1 Lewin’s Honeyeater [12:17], 1 Laughing Kookaburra [12:45].
At Jabiru Geneebeinga Wetlands we saw 3 Willy Wagtails [1: 50 PM], 2 Australian White Ibis[2:05]. 2 Purple Swamphens [2:10], many Black Swans [2:11], 1 Black-necked Stork [2:20].
At McMahon’s Lagoon: numerous Cattle Egrets [3:00], 1 Great Crested Grebe [3:10 PM], numerous Welcome Swallows [3:15], 2 Musk Ducks [3:25], 2 Black-winged Stilts [3:30], 2 Glossy Ibises [3:45].
This was a great day! We enjoyed ourselves, saw some very pleasant scenery, had a nice picnic lunch and saw more birds than on any other single day.
