| The page is © 2006 by Robert Runté, Faculty of Education, University of Lethbridge The site is a blatant hoax. It is part of a class demonstration in Education 4391 to illustrate the ease with which material may be posted to the web sans any kind of review process, and to illustrate search engine optimization strategies one may use to improve one's positioning within search results, regardless of quality of content.
The site initially ranked as #219 on Google (using routine metatags; being "current"); after using a simple 'black hat" trick of having 20 students create blogs in which they linked to the site, a week later the hoax page ranked #5 out of 9,380 web pages from Canada.
2007 UpdateNothing further was done to promote this hoax site from March 2006 to March 2007, to see how far it would fall in the ratings without artificial assistance. By March 15, 2007 the site had only fallen 5th to #11th place out of "pages from Canada"; but note that the number of "pages from Canada" had increased from 9,000 to 12,000 in the same period, so relative to the total number of sites, really has not fallen at all. Similarly, the site has only fallen from 160 to 167 out of 336,000 pages worldwide. On March 15, 2007 this page and the original hoax site were modified slightly to register as updated pages; and students were again directed to link to the hoax page in their blogs, to see if the page could again be driven higher. back to the hoax site |
