Alberta Oil Sands Project

Alberta Oil Sands Project focuses on the Canadian Tar Sands, a site of global industry with economic and environmental implications. Images are from aerial filming near Fort McMurray, Alberta, of oil sands extraction and its effect on the surrounding region—including upgrading plants, open pit mining, tailing ponds, land reclamation projects, urban sprawl and changing demographics.

In October 2011, Kavanagh attended a 3-day U.S. Media Tour and Symposium, organized by the Consulate General of Canada, Denver, CO. The delegation consisted of eight U.S. journalists from newspapers, web news, and business journals. The Symposium was hosted by representatives of the Government of Alberta, and by the Canadian Association of Petroleum Products (CAPP.) Tours of mining operations were conducted by representatives from Syncrude Canada Ltd. and Connacher Oil.
