PHYSICS 5250

ASSIGNMENT #6

DUE ON FEBRUARY 25, 2004

#1.  Read sections 8.1 to 8.5 on pages 231 to 242 and summarize the important physics discussed on these pages.

#2.  Prove the following theorem.  For any family of lattice planes separated by a distance d, there are reciprocal lattice vectors perpendicular to the planes, the shortest of which has a length of 2 p/d.  Conversely, for any reciprocal lattice vector G, there is a family of lattice planes normal to G and separated by a distance d, where 2 p/d is the length of the shortest reciprocal lattice vector parallel to G.
