The Exercise Physiology Lab is one of three interconnected laboratories that constitute the Southern Alberta Centre for Successful Aging (SACSA). SACSA, which is funded by the Canadian Foundation for Innovation and the University of Lethbridge, is an interdisciplinary research centre dedicated to the improvement of physical functioning and wellness among aging Canadians. The primary research focus of the Exercise Physiology Lab is exploring the relationship between physical activity and age-related changes in hormones, as well as understanding how physical activity patterns change as people transition through retirement. The Exercise Physiology Lab integrates both teaching and research and is also equipped to do high-performance fitness testing. Equipment and facilities available in the lab include the following:

  • Humac NORM isokinetic dynamometer
  • 2 complete metabolic measurement systems
  • 2 medical-grade treadmills
  • 4 Monark cycle ergometers
  • Brower wireless timing system
  • 12-lead ECG and Polar S610 heart rate monitors
  • SMI Power Opto Sensor and software for cycle ergometer power tests
  • portable lactate analyzers
  • a connected Exercise Biochemistry lab for obtaining, storing, and analyzing blood samples.

The Exercise Physiology Lab is housed within the new U of L Centre for Sport and Wellness which includes a 50 m pool, the Ascent Climbing Centre, a triple gymnasium, a 200 m indoor track and a state-of-the-art fitness centre.
