Since my doctoral research began in 1995, I have been interested in the poetics and politics of popular culture and their implications for education.

My book ‘Painting Without Permission: an ethnographic study of hip hop graffiti culture’, was printed by Bergin and Garvey of Greenwood Press, 2002. With my partner Michael Campbell, I collaborated to make a number of videos about hip hop culture and art videos.

I published a number of articles on the social construction of identity, and designed a graduate course in education called Visual Literacy for Teachers: The Social Construction of Identity. Most recently my paper Community, Collaboration: Multimedia Education and Change published by McGill University, (with accompanying videos), analyses the processes and techniques that were taught during three artist in the school multimedia projects. I received a Research Excellence Envelope grant to continue this research.

My own art practice involves audio and video installations.
