JAMS Club
What is Manga Anyway?

Manga is a type of Japanese literature which resembles a graphic novel or comic book.  Even today, most manga is in black-and-white, following the traditional style.  Many anime television shows, video releases, and movies are based on manga.  Manga also has a more broad application in Japan than comic books do in Canada, with manga books and magazines produced for adults as well as children.  The term "manga" is often used in English to refer to the art style used in Japanese animation and manga.

Although it's spelled with an "a", manga is generally pronounced like the Japanese word, so that the first syllable rhymes with "bond".  (ie, "mongah").  It's also often pronounced with the Americanized pronunciation, so that the first syllable rhymes with "mangling this word".  (The US company, Manga Entertainment, also pronounces its name this way.)
