B C Mt Columbia Bush River

Mt. Columbia at 3747m (12293 ft) is the highest point in Alberta and the second highest Canadian Rocky Mountain (Mt. Robson is 217m higher). It is located west of the main mass of the huge Columbia Icefield, whose waters drain to the Pacific, Arctic and Atlantic Oceans. The SW side, B.C. side, of Mt. Columbia is remote and seldom visited but can be reached by following 70 km of reasonably good condition logging roads up the Bush River, NW of Golden B.C. The last 3 or 4 of road are quite grim, however. From the end of the road, we followed a route up onto a ridge and its view of glaciers.

A deep canyon on the Valenciennes River, a tributary of the Bush River, is also worth visiting.

B C Murtle Lake

Murtle Lake is in Wells Gray Provincial Park near Blue River, B.C. between Jasper and Kamloops. The shoreline is about a 100 km long canoe. We had almost no wind with a near glassy lake surface most of the time. At the end of the north arm of the lake we saw one of several forest fires. A beuatiful hike is from the east side of the lake up Wavey Ridge.

B C Purcell Mtns Silent Lake

Silent Lake and Silent Mountain are SW of Golden, B.C. and SE of Roger's Pass. The trailhead is reached by driving 57 km of logging road from the east. The hike to the lake is easy and the views from above the lake are spectacular.

Rocky Mtns Mt Robson

Mt. Robson (3954m, 12972ft) is the highest mountain in the Canadian Rockies. We backpacked to Berg Lake and had unusually good weather. One of our day trips took us along the side of Robson Glacier to the summit of Titkana Mtn. (2829m, 9280ft) which has views of many icefields including those on Mt. Robson.

Rocky Mtns Tumbling Glacier

These photos are from a backpacking trip to Tumbling Glacier in Kootenay National Park in mid-August 2005. We hiked west from the campsite at Tumbling Glacier to Rockwall Pass and up along ridges to the north off the trail. On the way back, to the north-west of the pass, we discover fabulous Indian Paintbrush meadows mostly concentrated in creek beds.

Tabitha the hiking cat

One of our cats, Tabby, is very intelligent and we've managed to train her to walk on a leash. She's also a pretty good hiker and loves being outdoors although she much prefers forest walks and doesn't much like sunny or windy open areas.
